Book Janet as a Speaker at Your Event

ServicesCirclesTraining
Janet is experienced in providing training for parents, carers and professionals on a range of subjects relating to speech, language and communication skills, including report writing for professionals providing evidence to Special Educational Needs and Disability Tribunals or Medico-Legal Reports, speech and language development in twins, and the language of autism.
Janet is the co-author of a new book entitled The Ordinariness of Impairment: inspiring stories about children with special needs which she has written with Raymond Aaron, New York Times Top 10 Best Selling Author.

The Ordinariness of Impairment is a book that dives into the current legal system in England, focusing on the reality of parents struggling with local authorities. However, instead of focusing on what parents cannot do, Janet inspires parents with stories of success.

In addition, there are action points that can help parents know where to go next, especially when they are feeling overwhelmed. Her point of view isn’t the clinical perspective of a professional therapist, but also comes from the heart of a parent of a child with his own unique needs.

Janet combines working as a therapist in a specialist school for students with autism with her Expert Witness work and mentoring parents and professionals via online programmes in their own personal development journey. Her work has also led her to create SEN Conferences and an online community pulling parents, experts and various members of the system together to learn how to address the needs of their children, as well as grow in their understanding of the system.

Janet believes that everyone has the right to a voice and for that voice to be heard. Through her own experience and expertise she can show you how to achieve that for yourself, your family or those you work with. Her vision for the future is a world that is fairer, fully integrating and including all in society.

Janet would make an inspirational speaker at your conference and she will travel anywhere in the World to speak to parents, professionals and young people themselves. To book her for your event please fill in the form below.

Personal Development Individual Mentoring, Groups or Programmes

ServicesCirclesInnerCircleJanet became a member of Damsels in Success in September 2014 because she was looking for a supportive community to continue her own personal development journey. She was a speech and language therapist and had run her own independent practice for 15 years but when her youngest son had open heart surgery, her husband had to give up his job and her mother died all in the space of a year she was struggling to hold everything together and make ends meet. Janet loves her work and working with her clients with speech, language and communication needs but was spreading herself too thinly and was so tired. Having a husband and four amazing sons who she adored was great but she had no female support and sometimes she just felt so lonely. The golden thread through her life had been and still is to enable everyone else to have a voice and for that to be heard, valued and respected. That could be literally with her speech and language therapy and voice clients or as an expert witness going with families to court or special educational needs and disability tribunal. At the point at which Janet had left the NHS in 1997 and become an independent therapist, she achieved her NLP Master Practitioner status which has been invaluable in working personally and professionally to understand different learning and thinking styles.

Janet became a Director and launched her own monthly Damsels in Success group in Ely, Cambridgeshire in October 2015 to inspire women locally be part of a global mission changing the way that women live and work to experience more success with ease in their lives. She continues to attend courses and seminars every month to deepen her own learning, practices and insight which she uses in all aspects of her work.

In addition to running her group Janet works with individuals who join her 12 month programme (one hour per month) setting clear achievable individual goals using Leonie Dawson Workbooks, providing accountability, developing daily rituals and habits that nurture mind, body and spirit such as The Balance Procedure, and follow their own path authentically. There is a book of the month to read and activities to work through in between monthly sessions.

The Platinum Business School is a mentoring programme for those people wanting to learn more about advertising, marketing and selling their services or products and enables them to become a certified health coach over a 4 month period.

Janet also has an inner circle of just 5 women who meet for one whole day each month to focus deeply on integrating these empowering practices into their daily lives and celebrating successes together.

Voice Feminisation

ServicesCirclesVoiceFeminisationJanet O’Keefe has had success in working with male to female transexuals desiring a more feminine sounding voice. Female to male transsexuals take male hormones as part of their transition which enables them to go through puberty which automatically enlarges the larynx and lowers the voice. Feminising a voice for male to female transsexuals is not affected by the hormone treatment, and so can be more difficult. Some people opt for surgery to reduce the size of the larynx. However, even if surgery is an option, it is strongly advised that speech, language and voice therapy is undertaken both before and after to ease the adjustment and avoid voice misuse. Therapy therefore involves a strong commitment on the part of both the therapist and the transsexual person. Therapy can be provided individually in person, intensively in groups or via Skype. Home practice is essential to success.

The programme is 8 x 1 hour sessions and costs £1600.

Social Communication and Thinking Skills

ServicesCirclesSocialSkillsJanet is experienced in running social communication skills or social thinking groups for pupils, teachers and parents. The groups cater for shy, withdrawn children, noisy, domineering children, rough, aggressive and immature children, as well as those with specific needs as a result of Autism or Asperger syndrome.

Each session is divided into 2 sections. In the first the focus is on directly teaching social skills and in the second the children get a chance to practice these. In the group social skills are taught in practical ways using methods that will interest and motivate children. Janet incorporate this cognitive behavioural approach with Social Thinking, Superflex and Social Detective material by Michelle Garcia Winner.

The programme Janet provides is 20 hours for a maximum of 5 students aged 7-19yrs. This is 12 hours directly with the students, 4 hours with parents and 4 hours with teachers. The parent and teacher sessions can be provided by Skype or zoom or online webinar. The total cost for the tuition for this course is £2000. Travel and Accommodation expenses may be needed in addition.
